Top 10 DIY Haircuts of 2020

With the second lockdown in effect and no set date of when the barbers may open, you may be stuck with cutting your own hair or getting someone else to do it for you.

While you may try and convince yourself that it doesn’t matter if it goes horribly wrong because you’re not going outside, deep down we all really want our hair to look good, even if it’s just for our benefit.

The only problem is, it’s really hard to cut hair well if you haven’t been trained. It’s also stressful as there’s no undo button, once you cut it, it’s gone!

But, there is hope! Read on to see which hairstyles you could easily replicate yourself at home with a pair of clippers and some scissors.

The Buzz Cut

There has been no better time to try the buzz cut. You will need a pair of hair clippers for this one. Simply pick your length, usually 1 or 2 inch attachment, and cut it all off. Depending on how quickly your hair grows, it is quite low maintenance. If it gets a bit long, repeat the process. With next to zero maintenance this could be the ideal style for guys who just want an easy hairstyle to take care of.

The Crew Cut

If you’re unsure about the full buzz cut, this one might be a bit less extreme and suitable for more men. The crew cut has shaved sides with slightly longer hair on top. The hair is faded at the sides into the top, has a short taper at the back and is longer on top nearer the front.

The Taper Haircut

The taper haircut is what you will most probably see while out and about. This style is shortest at the sides and gradually gets longer as it goes up to your crown. It is longer on top than the crew cut and therefore gives you more control over how you style it.

The Side Parting

The trickiest part about this is finding your parting, especially if you have been neglecting the cut for a couple of weeks. Sweep your hair over to the desired side and trim your hair quite short on the sides gradually getting slightly longer as it reaches your parting. You can either do this on one side or both. Be sure to purchase some product to sweep your hair over and keep it in place throughout the day.

The French Crop

This style is slightly rougher around the edges and would suit guys who like it longer and messier on top. The key is to keep it short at the sides and back, shaving up to the corners of your forehead and right up to just below your crown at the back. To execute the style properly, you should have your hair pushed forward on top.

The Ivy League

This is probably the least eccentric haircut you could choose and one of the easiest to pull off well. It is essentially a buzz cut but with a longer attachment. Go for the 7 or 8 attachment and keep it slightly longer on top. This style requires hardly any maintenance but gives you the option to experiment with a little length on top. You could also comb it, make a quiff or create a shallow parting.

Short Back and Sides

This is a very popular cut amongst British men. To execute, you should pick your desired side length, usually a 2 or 3 attachment, and shave the sides while slowly fading towards the top. And that’s it. If the top is already too long this might not be the best option. This style looks clean and rough at the same time with defined sides and a messy top.

The Clean Shave

This is definitely not for everyone, but if you feel the time is right and you want to push the boat out, shave it all off! Simply get the clippers and shave it all of and once you’ve done that, get some shaving foam and a shaving razor and give your head a shave. If you’re looking to keep it neat and tidy it may take a bit of effort to keep it clean-shaven. Or, you could just let it grow and watch it slowly transform into a buzz cut.

The Butch Cut

This one is again quite similar to the buzz cut but with a bit more length=gth and definition. The attachment usually used for this is the ¼ inch. While this style is usually cut the same length all around, if you choose, you could add in a fade to the top to give your hair another dimension.

The Induction Cut

Stemming from the army, this is the shortest type of buzz cut, as the name suggests. This is definitely not for everyone, but it requires minimal upkeep and is very easy to do and redo when necessary. If you take the guard off from your clippers, this will give you the correct length.

There is no better time to learn how to cut your own hair. Simply pick one of these styles, grab your clippers and give yourself a DIY haircut.
