norway

At the top of the world, it’s no surprise that Norway is filled with incredible natural beauty and history. The country is bordered by mountains, fjords and glaciers, making it one of the most beautiful places on earth. Let’s discover some amazing places in Norway!

Pulpit Rock

Pulpit Rock is a rock formation in the Lysefjorden, close to the town of Stavanger. It is about 70 meters high and has a flat top. The name comes from its resemblance to an old church pulpit. When the weather is good, it can be reached on foot from Stavanger in about 2 hours (there are also shuttle buses that run regularly during summer). It’s a popular tourist attraction with many viewpoints around the rock and you can even climb up some steps if you want to get closer to the top! A fun thing to do is take photos from different angles—on one side of this natural monument there is an amphitheater for concerts as well!

The Lofoten Islands

The Lofoten Islands are a group of islands located in the Arctic Circle. The Lofoten Islands are known for their landscapes and wildlife, which include seals, reindeer, and whales. The islands became popular with tourists in the 1930s when they were first opened up to the public by Hurtigruten, a Norwegian shipping company that provides transportation between Norway’s mainland coastal towns and cities.

Sognefjord

Sognefjord is the second longest fjord in Norway and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the most visited attractions in Norway, with over 3 million visitors annually. The largest towns along its shore are Åndalsnes, Skjolden and Flåm.

The Sognefjord has several branch fjords, including Lustrafjorden and Nærøyfjorden. The Sogneskarvet mountain range separates it from Lustrafjorden to the west, while the Jostedalsbreen glacier forms its eastern border with Nærøyfjorden.

At 404 metres (1,325 feet), Galdhøpiggen is an ultra-prominent peak rising above the surrounding terrain of Jotunheimen National Park in Oppland County in southern Norway.

Stave Churches

Located in Norway’s central region, these wooden churches are the country’s most famous tourist attraction. The Stave Church style is unique to Norway and Denmark. They were built during the 12th century and 13th century after Christianity was brought to Scandinavia by King Olav Tryggvason (995-1000). Today, these churches are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites because of their architectural value.

Bryggen, Bergen

  • Bryggen is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for good reason. The colorful buildings that line the wharf are beautiful, and the history of this town is fascinating. You can visit the fish market, where you can see men unloading their catches from boats as they have done for centuries. There are also many shops and restaurants to explore.
  • To enjoy the scenery, head down to the harbor at night and take in all of Bergen by candlelight—it will be an experience you’ll never forget!

Vigeland Sculpture Park

The Vigeland Sculpture Park is located in Frogner Park and features sculptures created by Gustav Vigeland, a Norwegian artist.

The sculptures are made from granite and depict the human body in various positions and moods.

The style of the sculptures is realistic, and some of them are very large while others are quite small.

Many of the sculptures feature babies or children, which may be part of why this park attracts so many families with children.

The Geirangerfjord

The Geirangerfjord is a fjord in Norway, and it’s one of the most visited tourist attractions in Norway. It was also named one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in 2004. The fjord is known for its natural beauty and boat trips that take you through it.

Jotunheimen National Park

Jotunheimen National Park is a national park in Norway, located in the county of Oppland, in the traditional region of Gudbrandsdal. Jotunheimen was established on 1 July 1971 and covers an area of 1,110 square kilometres (429 sq mi), making it the largest national park in Norway. The park includes mountains such as Store Skagastølstind, Galdhøpiggen and Glittertind and lakes such as Lake Bessvatnet (the deepest lake in Europe).

The Midnight Sun

The Midnight Sun is one of the most impressive phenomena you will experience in Norway. The sun does not set for several months in the summer, and it can be up for 24 hours a day during this time.

In fact, it’s not uncommon to see the sun rise at around 2 AM in June and July—and it doesn’t set until well after midnight! This means that you could easily enjoy an entire day of daylight without ever knowing what darkness looks like.

If you visit in wintertime instead, however—when we experience our Polar Nights—you’ll have about 4 hours of sunlight during those months (give or take). Still plenty long enough to hike out into nature and enjoy everything that Norwegians do best: appreciate nature and spend quality time with friends and family.

Hurtigruten is a shipping company that operates along the Norwegian coast. The Hurtigruten ships travel from Bergen to Kirkenes, but you can also take a cruise from Bergen to Trondheim or Tromso. If you are looking for an adventurous way to see Norway, this might be your best option.

Hurtigruten ships are small and comfortable, with modern amenities and plenty of space on deck for watching whales and other marine life. They often offer whale-watching tours during the summer months when these magnificent creatures migrate northward along their migration route towards Iceland.
