As more and more companies apply homework policies due to the spread of COVID-19, employees now have the task of trying to produce in the same way without their standard equipment. While smart working at home sounds like fun with a view, there is certainly no holiday and actual smart working is easier said than done.
All jobs are different and the amount you can afford will vary between career paths, employers, and internal policies, but there are some important homework tips when it comes to getting your jobs done (not to mention, staying fit and healthy while doing so!). Here are some great tips for working from home according to people who have worked successfully far away from the office.
Stick to your schedule
Just because you do not go to and from the office does not mean that you have to skip meals in the morning. Get up at your usual time, bathe, and put on real clothes (not pyjamas!). It may sound like a small thing, but it helps you prepare mentally for the next day and get into the mindset of smart working.
It also helps to keep the schedule organised. If you are accustomed to working nine to five hours, keep doing it at home. It’s easy to lose track of time and if you can’t stick to the normal balance of work-life, you can easily find yourself new.
Create a dedicated workspace
While it is tempting to stay in bed or go to your couch, those who work effectively at home agree that it is better to set up a channel. If you do not have a desk, use your dining table. Aside from making you feel like you’re in the “office,” this helps you stay calm, avoid distractions, and quit your job after a day.
Get on your feet
Sitting all day is unhealthy even in the office, but smart working from home means you miss your commute and have few reasons to get up from your seat all day. You can invest in a dry desk if you like to work with your feet, but if not make sure you always get up to stretch or walk.
If you have an extra hour or two off work, it is a good opportunity to exercise, either at home or on the go. Walking during the day can also help you feel like you are not stuck inside all day.
Get fresh air
With many companies are urging employees to stay home, you may be spending more time indoors. Open your windows to get in the daytime and cool air as much as possible, and take a short walk if you live in an uninhabited area – and make sure you wash your hands as soon as you get home.
Stay connected with your partner
If you work in a team, make sure you always come in the way you would in the office. Create what you need to do to stay organized and focused, and share the status of your list with your supervisor so they know you’re on top of your work. In addition to emails and messaging systems like Slack, it is a good idea to set up regular phone calls or video conferencing such as Skype, FaceTime, or Zoom.
Fight the urge to do more
This may seem like a good time to catch up on household chores, but it’s easier than you might expect. There’s nothing wrong with taking a short break, but don’t let homework interfere with your production. You wouldn’t do that if you were at work.
