The Cheapest Cars to Insure In 2020

Car insurance can be an overwhelming cost, especially for new drivers. As it is the biggest motoring expense next to the price of the car, it is sensible to try and buy a car that is cheap to insure.

Buying a car that is cheap to insure doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice, however. There are plenty of good quality cars with power under the hood that are placed in the lower insurance bracket. These cars are obviously not the newest cars on the market or top of the line, but some sacrifices do have to be made.

An easy rule to follow when looking for a car that will get you cheap car insurance is the engine size and the plate year. To get the cheapest car insurance you will want to buy a car that has a 1 -1.2 litre engine and is a couple of years old. These cars have less acceleration and a lower top speed, which the insurance company likes as it means less chance of an accident.

The insurance provider will also take into account your driving history and certain attributes such as your gender and age. If you have previous claims on insurance or driving offences, it will be hard to get a cheap insurance offer even if you have the perfect car.

To help you save as much money as possible on your monthly insurance cost, we have done the research and picked out the cheapest cars to insure in 2020.

Volkswagen

If you like Volkswagen cars you have a couple of options. Both the Polo and Up are able to qualify for a group 1 insurance rating if you select the 1-litre model. Volkswagen cars are notorious for lasting long and being an all-round quality car. With the small engine, it might feel a tad slow, but with the sleek interior and modern tech, you won’t be disappointed with this choice.

Hyundai i10

This is a small car with a small engine, but that form factor will suit a lot of people. It is fitted with a touchscreen and all the standard tech such as aircon, and enough room to fit 3 people in the back seat. The drive is light and nippy making it ideal for whizzing around town. It will be hard to find a cheaper car to insure than the Hyundai i10.

Skoda Citigo

While this is a different make and model, the Skoda Citigo is basically the Volkswagen Up. This is good because it means that this car has the same positive amenities and space, but again, the engine lacks a little bit. Overall, the Citigo is a little less sleek and feels a little cheaper than the Up but it does have a solid driving experience.

Ford Fiesta

The classic ford model that has been around for decades is surprisingly one of the cheapest cars to insure. You will have to go for a small engine model, but everything else is a pleasant mixture between luxury and economy. Everyone knows it’s not going to pull out any tricks, but it is a reliable car filled with features that drive very well. It is also nice that cheap insurance feels like a steal.

SEAT Ibiza

You may be surprised to see the Ibiza on this list, and so were we! While the outside is very sleek with a great marketing campaign, the inside leaves a little to be desired. It is spacious and has a big boot, but the 1-litre engine is seriously lacking. The SEAT actually only manages to get into the group 2 insurance bracket which will cost you more than the other cars on this list. While you could do better than this car, you could also do a lot worse.

Buying a car is a big commitment, and when you’re making that commitment you have to decide whether it is worth paying a large amount every month just to have a nicer, faster car. Car insurance can be really cheap or it can be really expensive. With the cars on this list, you can get car insurance seriously cheap and actually not be too disappointed with the car itself. These cars are very respectable with all the bells and whistles of the higher models but a slightly smaller engine. Just leave yourself a bit more time to get to your destination and you will be laughing all the way to the bank with some extra change in your pocket.
